Hops

Hops are long, trailing vines whose seed pods are most commonly used to flavor beer. The vines can grow over thirty feet high!

Giovanna Sassi has been working on a project with various hops species investigating phylogenetics and pathogens. The main fungal pathogens hops face are powdery and downy mildew.

Giovanna is currently extracting and amplifying hops DNA from several wild and cultivated varieties to determine their levels of relatedness.
