ABOUT US
The Crop Genetic Heritage Lab @ UVM focuses on conservating and enhancing the genetic diversity of Crops. We study comparative crop domestication to understand the processes impacting crop diversity and factors that may have limited the potential of crops to interact with soil microorganisms. Locally in Vermont, we work with a range of community partners to conserve endangered varieties and to introduce new crop species to Vermont.
Some of the species we work to conserve and adapt to changing palettes and a shifting climate are winter-hardy fields peas, chickpeas, lentils, mung beans, tuberous legumes as well as plants like corn, African eggplant, and hemp and hops.
The lab is run by Dr. Eric Bishop-von-Wettberg, a professor in the Plant and Soil Science Department at the University of Vermont, and is linked to the Consortium on Crop Genetic Heritage @ UVM with Professors Travis Reynolds and Daniel Tobin.
